Looking for a unique way to explore the hilly and picturesque city of Lisbon? Look no further than the city’s iconic funiculars and elevators.

Built to help locals and tourists alike navigate the steep inclines and winding streets, these charming lifts provide stunning views of the city while also being a convenient mode of transportation.

With three distinct lines to choose from, each with its own history and unique charm, a ride on one of Lisbon’s funiculars is a must-do experience for anyone visiting the city.

Elevador da Bica

If you’re looking for a unique and exciting way to experience Lisbon, look no further than the Elevador da Bica. This iconic funicular is one of the most popular attractions in the city, thanks to its dramatic route along a steep incline and past the river below.

Unlike the other funiculars in the city, the Ascensor da Bica runs straight through a street lined with charming and traditional homes on either side.

Decorated with eye-catching street art, this funicular offers a lively glimpse of Rua da Bica’s nightlife during the Festas Populares.

Since 2002, it has been recognized as a national landmark, and its century-long history and stunning surroundings make it the perfect spot for a photo op.

As you arrive from Cais do Sodré, take a moment to appreciate the beautiful Portuguese tiles at this stop, and let the magical atmosphere draw you in for a ride on the Ascensor da Bica.

Elevador da Glória

Lisbon’s Elevador da Glória, the most well-known of the three funiculars, links Restauradores Square with Rua San Pedro de Alcántara in Bairro Alto.

Take a ride to the top and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon’s San Pedro de Alcántara. The best in the city, in the opinion of many.

Since its opening on 24 October 1885, Elevador da Glória has been a national landmark in Portugal.

After a short ride, don’t miss the dazzling panorama offered by Miradouro de Santa Catarina, only three minutes away through Rua do Loreto.

The Lift of Lavra

Looking for an exciting and unique way to explore Lisbon? Look no further than the Elevador do Lavra! As the oldest funicular in the city, this 1884 railway is steeped in history and provides a convenient and fun way to explore the parishes of Santo António and Arroios.

Designed by renowned engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, the funicular is a marvel of engineering, with an average grade of 22.9% and a railway gauge of 90cm. Be sure to take in the sights as you ascend the 188m-long track, which connects Largo da Anunciada to Rua Câmara Pestana.

And don’t forget, Elevador do Lavra was designated a National Monument in 2002!
