Lisbon has countless breath-taking landmarks, and Basilica de Estrela is one of them. The monument that is built in the 18^th century is an architectural marvel. Built as a fulfillment of religious doctrine, Basilica de Estrela is dedicated to Queen Maria I after she gave birth to a son. However, the son died before seeing the finalized building and he is buried together with his mother in the basilica.

Exterior of the Architecture

The exterior of the building boasts a beautiful rococo dome and two twin towers that are ornamented with detailed representations of Christian figures. With its architectural style of late baroque and neoclassical, the basilica focuses mostly on the rococo branch which was originated in France. Located on one of the hills of the city, the building’s asymmetrical patterns imitate its flamboyant expression.

The interiors, employ a more austere sensation rather than countless intricate details. Yet, the Christmas manger inside is decorated with half a thousand figures of Christianity.

How to Go to Basilica de Estrela

Transportation to the Basilica de Estrela is quite easy. The monument is located at Largo da Estrela. Visitors may choose to use their own cars or taxis for a quicker trip. However, it is often suggested that the best way to reach the basilica is by the famous yellow trams of Lisbon. Trams numbered 25 or 28 have a stop right in front of the basilica. This option is great for beating the traffic. Also, these trams provide tourists with a nice panorama of the city on their way. Especially during sunset, the picturesque beauty of the city reflects through windows on every street, and the tram trip transforms into a journey within a fairy tale.

Within a very close distance to the Basilica de Estrela, there are several other tourist attractions. Famous Jardim de Estrela, for instance, is an amazing garden hosting many exotic botany samples. The park is great for taking in the city’s fresh air while resting in-between destinations. There are two museums nearby. One is the Marionette Museum which is a world-famous gallery of puppets. The other one is the Ancient Art Museum which showcases priceless pieces of Eastern and European artworks.
