Tuk Tuk is a famous method of transportation in Asia, especially in Thailand. Tuk-tuks are not included in the city’s traditional public transport system. Regardless, they become very practical to roam around Lisbon’s narrow streets. Because of some narrow roads around Alfama and Bairro Alto, where cars cannot across, Tuk Tuk has become a popular vehicle for sightseeing.

1Pricing

Several circuits are available, including stops for taking photos and looking around. Prices depend on the route, duration, and comfort. Since Tuk Tuks are not for the means of transportation like those in Thailand, but has become a tourist attraction, the prices are way more expensive. Expect 45-80 for a maximum 2 or 3-hour tour that takes up to six people. The price can reach €110 for a 2-hour ride in larger Tuk Tuks. Special tours are also available on request.

2Locals

Citizens of Lisbon don’t like Tuk Tuks. They say the vehicles are making too much noise, disrupt the city’s order, abiding no rules to park anywhere, and causing air pollution.

Indeed, the mayor of the city has made some regulations for Tuk Tuk parking sites. Moreover, he pushes the vehicles to replace their old diesel engines with eco-friendly electric motors in a short time. Most companies have already begun to offer electric tuk-tuks, which are the best option for comfort. Nonetheless, Lisbon is not exempt from occasional traffic jams.

3Destinations

With that in mind, we recommend that you choose a circuit in the historic neighborhoods, such as Alfama, Graça or Bairro Alto. In general, these are quieter neighborhoods, and harder to explore on foot given the paved steep streets. Express sightseeing tours are worth considering for visiting the modern sections of the city.

Tuk tuks can usually be found parked on centrally located streets and squares in Lisbon, namely Praça da Figueira, Praça dos Restauradores (near Glória funicular), Rua do Carmo and Largo das Portas do Sol in Alfama.
